How to Sell on eBay in 2026: Fees, Listings, Shipping, Payouts

Published · By ListBomb

Short answer: To sell on eBay, set up a seller account with a checking account for payouts, take clear photos of the actual item, write an 80-character title with brand, model and size, fill in every item specific, price from what the same item actually sold for, and ship with tracking. In most categories eBay charges a final value fee of 13.6% of the total sale plus $0.30 or $0.40 per order, and the first 250 listings each month have no insertion fee. eBay sends your earnings to your bank account, usually within a few business days of the sale.

What do you need before you sell on eBay?

  • An eBay account set up for selling. Use your real name and address: eBay's payouts page says payouts may be held if it finds a discrepancy with the information you gave at registration.
  • A checking account or Visa/Mastercard debit card for payouts. eBay's payouts page says you can't use a savings account or a PayPal account to receive payouts.
  • A way to ship: a scale, a tape measure, boxes or mailers, and a printer (or the QR-code label option at a drop-off location).

How much does it cost to sell on eBay?

eBay charges two main fees: an insertion fee when you list and a final value fee when the item sells. Here are the basic numbers from eBay's selling fees page for most categories on eBay.com (checked Oct 24, 2026):

FeeMost categories
Insertion feeFirst 250 listings each month free, then $0.35 per listing
Final value fee13.6% of the total amount of the sale, up to $7,500 per item
Final value fee above $7,5002.35% on the portion over $7,500
Per-order fee$0.30 if the order is $10.00 or less, $0.40 if it's over $10.00
PhotosUp to 24 per listing, free

Some categories differ. eBay's page lists 15.3% for Books & Magazines, Movies & TV and most Music, 13.25% for most Coins & Paper Money and trading cards, 6.7% for Guitars & Basses, and 8% with no per-order fee for athletic sneakers that sell for $150 or more. Store subscribers, vehicles and eBay Live have their own fee pages. Rates change, so check eBay's selling fees page for your category before you price.

What "total amount of the sale" means: eBay calculates the final value fee on the item price plus shipping charged to the buyer, handling and sales tax. There's no separate payment processing fee on top.

Example (most categories): you sell a jacket for $50 and charge $10 shipping, and the buyer pays $4.80 sales tax. The total is $64.80. The final value fee is 13.6% of $64.80 ($8.81) plus $0.40, so $9.21. If you're still within your 250 free listings, that's your whole eBay fee for the sale.

Other charges to know about: optional upgrades (bold, subtitle, reserve price) cost extra; eBay adds a 1.65% international fee if you sell to a buyer outside the US without using eBay International Shipping; and eBay charges a $20 dispute fee if you're found responsible for a chargeback. Sellers rated Below Standard pay an additional 6% on final value fees the next month.

How do you take eBay photos that sell?

eBay's picture policy requires at least one photo that's 500 pixels on the longest side. It does not allow:

  • Stock photos for used, damaged or defective items
  • Borders, added text, artwork or watermarks of any kind
  • Photos that don't accurately show the item

Use all the free photo slots you need. Start with the whole item on a plain background in good light, then show labels, model numbers, measurements and every flaw. Showing flaws up front cuts returns.

How do you write an eBay title and item specifics?

eBay's Seller Center says you have 80 characters for a title and should use as many as you can. eBay search matches titles closely, so put in the words a buyer types:

  • Brand + item + model or type + size + color + key detail, for example "Nike Boys Blue Lace-Up Sneakers Size 3 AB0011-234" (eBay's own example)
  • Skip special characters and irrelevant words

Then fill in item specifics (brand, size, color, model, material and so on). eBay uses them as search filters, so a listing missing "Size" won't show up when a buyer filters by size. Pick the condition honestly; it's one of the first things buyers check.

ListBomb can draft the title, description and a suggested price from your photos. Read the draft and fix anything that isn't exactly right before you post.

How do you price an item on eBay?

Price from what the same item actually sold for, not what other sellers are asking.

  • Sold items filter: search for your item on eBay and filter to sold items. eBay says completed-listings search covers items sold in the previous 90 days.
  • Product research in Seller Hub: available to sellers with Seller Hub access. eBay says it covers up to 3 years of sales, shows average sold price and sell-through rate, and includes the real price when a Best Offer was accepted.

Match condition and shipping when you compare. A used item with free shipping and a new item with $12 shipping aren't the same comp. Choose Buy It Now (fixed price) for most everyday items; eBay suggests auctions for rare or high-demand items where buyers will compete.

How does shipping work on eBay?

You can charge the buyer for shipping or offer free shipping and build it into your price. Remember the final value fee counts shipping you charge.

Most sellers use eBay Labels: from Orders in My eBay or Seller Hub, enter the package weight and dimensions, choose USPS, UPS or FedEx, and print the label on a home printer or a label printer. eBay says its negotiated rates usually cost less than paying at the counter for most services, the tracking number uploads to the order automatically, and the label can be paid from your sale funds. No printer? Some services let you show a QR code at a drop-off location instead.

Tips:

  • Weigh and measure the packed box. eBay asks for accurate weight and dimensions, rounded up to the next whole number.
  • Ship within the handling time you set in the listing.
  • Always use tracking. It's your proof of delivery if a buyer says the item never arrived.

What return policy should you set on eBay?

eBay lets you pick one of these:

  • No returns
  • 30-day buyer-paid returns
  • 30-day free returns
  • 60-day buyer-paid returns
  • 60-day free returns

(14-day returns are allowed in a few categories such as Jewelry, Digital Cameras and Collectibles & Art.)

Even if you choose no returns, eBay says the eBay Money Back Guarantee still lets a buyer return an item that doesn't match the listing. Accurate photos, condition and item specifics are your best protection. You can also set rules in Returns preferences, for example refunding automatically and letting the buyer keep a cheap item when return shipping would cost more than the item.

How and when does eBay pay you?

eBay runs payments itself. Buyers pay eBay, eBay deducts its fees, and the rest goes to your payout method:

  1. After the buyer pays, your money shows as Processing. eBay says it typically becomes Available 1-2 days after the buyer's payment is confirmed, unless a hold applies.
  2. Payouts are daily by default. You can switch to weekly, biweekly or monthly (sent on Tuesdays).
  3. After eBay sends a payout, your bank typically takes 1-3 business days to post it.
  4. Express payouts to an eligible debit card or bank account typically arrive within 30 minutes for a flat $2.00 fee.

eBay's payouts page also says that starting November 4, 2026, it is gradually moving eligible US private sellers and sole proprietors to eBay balance, where payouts are on demand by default and you withdraw when you want (you can still pick an automatic schedule). Holds can delay any of these steps, so don't count on sale money for the next day.

What mistakes do new eBay sellers make?

  1. Pricing from asking prices. Use sold items or Product research.
  2. Short titles. Use the 80 characters with brand, model and size.
  3. Skipping item specifics. Buyers filter on them.
  4. Stock photos or hidden flaws. Not allowed for used items, and they lead to returns.
  5. Guessing package weight. Weigh the packed box.
  6. Forgetting fees include shipping and tax. Price with the 13.6% plus per-order fee in mind (or your category's rate).
  7. Taking a deal off eBay. eBay's fees page says asking a buyer for contact info to complete a sale outside eBay can get you charged the final value fee even if the item doesn't sell.
  8. Selling the same item twice. If it's also listed on another site, take the other copies down the moment it sells.

How does crosslisting fit in with eBay?

eBay reaches shoppers nationwide; local apps like Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp and Craigslist reach buyers who want to pick up today. Listing the same item in more places gets more buyers to see it. The risk is selling it twice, so every other copy has to come down as soon as it sells.

Here's how ListBomb handles each site:

MarketplaceHow ListBomb posts it
eBayPosted for you through eBay's official API, after you connect your eBay account
Facebook MarketplaceCopy-and-open: ListBomb copies the listing and opens the site; you paste and tap Post
OfferUpCopy-and-open: you paste and tap Post
CraigslistCopy-and-open: you pick your area and category, paste and publish
ListBomb MarketplacePosted for you, free

When you mark an item sold in ListBomb, it ends the eBay listing for you (that setting is on by default) and gives you a checklist to take down each copy you posted yourself on the other sites. ListBomb never posts to the copy-and-open sites in the background.

Quick checklist

  1. Seller account verified, checking account or debit card added for payouts.
  2. Clear photos of the actual item (500 px minimum), flaws shown, no stock photos or watermarks.
  3. Full 80-character title and every item specific filled in.
  4. Price set from sold items or Product research, with fees (13.6% + $0.30/$0.40 in most categories) in mind.
  5. Packed box weighed and measured; eBay Label with tracking.
  6. Return policy chosen on purpose.
  7. Other copies taken down the moment it sells.

FAQ

How much does eBay charge to sell?

For most categories on eBay.com, eBay's selling fees page lists a final value fee of 13.6% of the total amount of the sale (up to $7,500 per item, then 2.35% above that) plus a per-order fee of $0.30 for orders of $10 or less or $0.40 for orders over $10. Some categories have different rates, and the total amount of the sale includes shipping and sales tax. Check eBay's fee page for your category.

Is it free to list on eBay?

Usually. eBay gives sellers without a Store up to 250 zero insertion fee listings a month in most categories. After that, the insertion fee in most categories is $0.35 per listing. You still pay the final value fee when an item sells, plus any optional upgrades you add.

How do I get paid on eBay?

eBay pays you through its own payouts to a linked checking account or Visa or Mastercard debit card, with fees deducted first. eBay says funds typically become available 1-2 days after the buyer's payment is confirmed, unless held, and banks typically take another 1-3 business days. You can't use a savings account or a PayPal account for payouts. Express payouts to an eligible card or bank cost a flat $2.00.

Do I have to accept returns on eBay?

No. You can choose no returns, or 30-day or 60-day returns with the buyer or you paying return shipping. But eBay notes that even with no returns, the eBay Money Back Guarantee lets a buyer return an item that doesn't match the listing.

How do I find what an item actually sold for on eBay?

Filter an eBay search to sold items, or use Product research in Seller Hub. eBay says completed listings search covers items sold in the previous 90 days, while Product research covers up to 3 years of sales and includes the actual price when a Best Offer was accepted.

Can ListBomb post my listing to eBay?

Yes. After you connect your eBay account, ListBomb posts your listing to eBay for you through eBay's official API. When you mark the item sold in ListBomb, it ends the eBay listing (that setting is on by default). Other sites such as Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist are copy-and-open: ListBomb copies the listing and you post it yourself.
