How to Sell on Craigslist in 2026: Fees, Posting, Safety

Published · By ListBomb

Short answer: Most Craigslist for-sale posts are free, and Craigslist takes no cut when you sell. In the US, cars, trucks, RVs and motorcycles by owner cost $5 to post. To sell well, pick the right local area and category, make your first photo the whole item, price from what similar items actually sold for, renew free posts every few days, and meet buyers in a public place for cash. Ignore anyone who asks for a code, offers a cashier's check, or wants to send a mover.

What selling on Craigslist costs

Craigslist's posting fees page says all postings are free except a short list of categories. These are the ones that matter to sellers in the US:

What you postCost
Most for-sale-by-owner items (furniture, tools, electronics, appliances, etc.)Free
Cars/trucks, RVs and motorcycles by owner$5
Any for-sale-by-dealer category$5
Commission when the item sellsNone

Craigslist says a paid post is a one-time charge, with no automatic renewal or subscription fees.

How long a post stays up

Post typeHow long it stays live
Free posting7 to 45 days
Paid posting30 days

Every post slides down the list as newer posts go up, which is why renewing matters (Step 5).

Step 1: Pick the right area and category

Craigslist is organized by city. Choose the site for where the buyer will pick up the item, then choose "for sale by owner" and the closest category. A couch posted in the wrong category is much harder to find. Craigslist asks you to confirm a map location; you can use a ZIP code or cross streets instead of your exact address.

Step 2: Write a title buyers search for

  • Title: brand + item + model or size + one key detail, such as "KitchenAid Artisan 5 Qt Stand Mixer, Red."
  • Price: fill in the price field. Posts without a price get skipped.
  • Description: condition in plain words, what's included, measurements, pickup area (a neighborhood or cross street) and when you're free to meet.

ListBomb can draft the title, description and a suggested price from your photos. Read the draft and fix anything that isn't exactly right before you post.

Step 3: Add photos, best one first

Craigslist says the first image is the featured image, and it's the one people see while browsing. Make it the whole item in good light, then add close-ups of labels, model numbers and any flaws. You can drag images to change the order before you publish.

Step 4: Publish and confirm

After you review the draft and click publish, Craigslist may email you a confirmation link from robot@craigslist.org or ask you to verify a phone number. Craigslist says the post shows up about 15 minutes after confirmation. If you don't confirm, it never goes live.

Step 5: Renew free posts and price from sold listings

Craigslist lets you renew a free posting every 48 to 72 hours from your account page, which puts it back at the top. Paid posts can't be renewed; you'd have to pay for a new one.

For price, look at what the same item actually sold for recently, not what other sellers are asking. Set your price a little above what you'd accept, because Craigslist buyers expect to haggle. If you get no messages after a couple of renewals, lower the price or change the first photo.

Step 6: Avoid scams and meet safely

Craigslist's own advice comes down to one rule: deal locally, face to face. Its help pages say these are scams:

  • Requests to wire money or pay with gift cards
  • Requests to deposit a cashier's check
  • Anyone asking you for a "code" or "verification" number (Craigslist says these are always a scam)
  • Payment or delivery before meeting in person

It also says to be wary of offers that involve shipping or movers, and "guaranteed" payment services.

For the meetup, Craigslist recommends a public place like a bank or police department (some police departments have areas set aside for buying and selling), not a secluded spot and not your home. Tell someone where you're going, consider bringing a friend, and be extra careful with high-value items. Get paid before the item leaves your hands.

Craigslist's mail relay gives each post a random email address, so buyers don't see yours. Craigslist notes that the name in your email program and anything you type in the message do go through to the buyer.

Step 7: Post it on more than one site, and take it down when it sells

Craigslist is strong for furniture, appliances, tools and anything too big to ship. The same item can also sell on Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp or eBay. Posting in more places gets more buyers to see it. The risk is selling one item twice, so delete every other copy the moment it sells. On Craigslist, use the delete link on your account page or the manage link Craigslist emailed you.

Here's how ListBomb handles each site:

MarketplaceHow ListBomb posts it
eBayPosted for you through eBay's official API
CraigslistCopy-and-open: ListBomb copies the listing and opens Craigslist; you pick your area and "for sale by owner," paste, add photos and publish
Facebook MarketplaceCopy-and-open: you paste and tap Post
OfferUpCopy-and-open: you paste and tap Post
ListBomb MarketplacePosted for you, free

ListBomb never posts to Craigslist in the background. When you mark an item sold, ListBomb ends the eBay listing and walks you through taking down each other copy, Craigslist included.

Quick checklist

  1. Right city, "for sale by owner," right category.
  2. Specific title with brand and model, and a price filled in.
  3. Whole item as the first photo, flaws shown.
  4. Confirmation email or phone check completed.
  5. Free post renewed every 48 to 72 hours.
  6. Public meetup, cash in hand before the item changes hands.
  7. Every other copy deleted the day it sells.

Want to write one listing and get it ready for every site? ListBomb is free for 2 items at a time, with Basic at $9.99 a month and Pro at $19.99 a month.

FAQ

Is it free to sell on Craigslist?

Mostly, yes. Craigslist's posting fees page says all postings are free except listed categories. For sellers, the main US exceptions are $5 for cars/trucks, RVs and motorcycles by owner, and $5 for every for-sale-by-dealer category. Craigslist takes no commission when an item sells.

How long does a Craigslist post stay up?

Craigslist says free postings stay live for between 7 and 45 days, and paid postings stay live for 30 days. Every post moves down the list as newer posts are published.

How do I bump my Craigslist post back to the top?

For a free posting, click the renew link next to the posting title on your Craigslist account page. Craigslist says free postings can be renewed every 48 to 72 hours. Paid postings can't be renewed; you have to create and pay for a new post to move to the top.

What are the most common Craigslist scams for sellers?

Craigslist's own help pages say requests to wire money, pay with gift cards, deposit a cashier's check, or give someone a code or verification number are scams. It also warns about offers that involve shipping or movers and payment-processing services. Its main rule is to deal locally, face to face.

Can ListBomb post to Craigslist for me?

No. Craigslist is copy-and-open in ListBomb: it prepares your title, price and description, copies the text and opens Craigslist, and you pick your area and category, paste, add photos and publish yourself. Only eBay listings are posted for you, through eBay's official API.
